When discussing the clothing of Birka and other Norse cultures, a woolen dress is an iconic look which is functional while tending a fire or many other activities. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
My apron dress is inspired by the finds out of Birka. The wool I used was a light weight suiting with a 2:2 twill weave. The long seams of this dress were finished with a machine for speed, and all of the seam finishings were hand sewn. I used a woolen finishing technique I learned about while flipping through Woven into the Earth by Else Ostergard. The technique involves using wool yarn and a couching stich of sorts to encase the raw edges of the wool. The end result is a low profile and durable seam around the neck and hem of my apron dress. I love that all of the hand sewn elements of this dress start to create a decorative finish on the outside of the dress and the only extra embellishment I added was a herringbone stitch over the top of my initial seam which should help it lay more flat with wear rather than bubbling between the finished edges.
While I am still a novice when it comes to Viking age clothing, this was a really fun and I think a good beginner project. I know in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) we are always looking for ways to let folks get started and having made more of these outfits I can see why so many new folks love them. Hopefully this little dress diary on what Viking Woman wore was helpful. Thank you so much for watching. </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="354" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vwL9Fq3Vid8" width="481" youtube-src-id="vwL9Fq3Vid8"></iframe></div><br />

My inspiration for this dress is that I never really wear the style. It looks lovely on some people, but I had just never really gotten into it or the time period around it until friends were asking me for help to make their outfits. This year I realized we would be having a local SCA arts event on April Fool's Day and it seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass up and I had to do something. I decided on going incognito and making myself some Norse clothing. Even though I've done some work for others in this time period, I am by no means an expert and leaned on some of the work in this blog post:

This summer I've been letting myself fall back in love with the Society for Creative Anachronism. There have been some moments that have been hard for sure, but also some of my moments of greatest joy. One of the things I realized was I had completely forgotten what I need to pack in order to go camping in the different environments we see across the Western United States, at SCA events. This video does not speak in any official way for the non profit group or any of its branches. I simply wanted to share some of my pit falls and learning curves I've experiences over the years.
I am a list maker. So I started planning for my second camping trip of the summer by making a list of the things that I would need to have cleaned and packed after my first trip did not go as smoothly as I had hoped earlier this summer. Towards the end of the video I give you 6 tips I've picked up from camping at these events for more than 15 years in Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Idaho.
I know bullet journaling is not my normal content around here, but you could take the same approach to plan several costuming trips to fancy bed and breakfasts, or to go camping in the middle of no where. Where ever you take your vacation to this summer I hope you have a blast and get a little costume time mixed in with the rest of your activities. Do you often go camping with costumes? Tell me about your next trip, or your dream trip in the comments below. Some of my favorite SCA camping events include Battlemoor (Colorado), Pennsic (Pennsylvania), Uprising (Idaho), Highlands War (Arizona).

This video was recorded in and around my personal tent at an Society for Creative Anachronism event called Uprising in Idaho. Nothing in my video reflect the official stances of the larger living history group, but are based in my personal experiences as a paid member attending events for over a decade. Often at events we are doing something between living history camping and glamping. Not everything in my set up is 100% historically accurate, but many things give the impression and I love the results my current set of supplies give me. I fit everything here, including the tent poles and my dog in a Jeep Patriot, with a little creative packing. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">#mysca</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">#camping</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">#societyforcreativeanachronism</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">#livinghistory</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">#glamping</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="355" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Tp6q71BH9-U" width="470" youtube-src-id="Tp6q71BH9-U"></iframe></div><br />

I'm sharing the story of my Edwardian shawl, and discussing the goals I have for the project. I want to make a shawl that is authentic to the period in the pattern I used and crochet techniques. But rather than purely reproducing a historical piece I wanted my shawl to reflect the modern era that I live in. Truly great design is in fact timeless, and that is what I see when I look at this Edwardian shawl pattern.</span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
If you're also interested in deeper conversations about historical authenticity, then you'll want to watch this video! We'll talk about the goals of historically inspired projects and the need to define what what your goal is for the project as you're working on it. I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments!</span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="347" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zy5XeJSLEiE" width="481" youtube-src-id="zy5XeJSLEiE"></iframe></div><br />

Today we are going to discuss the hand sewing project I was going to work on the day I injured myself, and the 4 months it took to complete it while I relearned to walk and strengthen my leg. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="348" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QFxeeLMwPrA" width="495" youtube-src-id="QFxeeLMwPrA"></iframe></div><br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div>
In this project I used:
- lace I purchased from DSA Threads which I already post a video of me prepping:

-Straight pins
-Chalk

Other costumers and sewists have been reacting to their projects in 2022, and honestly this took up so much of my sewing time. I had to table some of my other projects while I could not stand because I could not cut out the fabric for next steps. This project was something I could work on through. I've never before make an iconic 16th century ruff before and the project had a lot of personal meanings and hang ups for me. When I was new to the Society for Creative Anachronism someone told me that I would never become a laurel if I had not made a ruff. This of course is ridiculous, but at the time I worried about it and allowed those insecurities to live rent free in the back of my mind for years. So this is me telling you as a laurel, follow the dopamine and joy to do the projects you want and interest you.
I made so many mistakes while sewing this ruff which is a big part of why it took me so long to finish. It was deceptively difficult to finish the project while I was on pain medication, or having to practically lay down to keep my leg from swelling. I think my best disability sewing hack from this experience was something I worked out with my mom. There was a time I wasn't able to sit on the bar height chairs at my table, so if I was in bed or on the couch sewing my project and hand box all went on a breakfast tray. The breakfast try was then able to be moved around the house without me leaving something I needed for my project, and I did not spill a bunch of pins into my soft furniture items.
Even after I finished this ruff, it was still several months before my mobility had improved enough to wear the clothing I loved and it would be appropriate for. It was a giant relief when I was able to start wearing my Italian Renaissance clothing again. I did not realize it until I put it on that I had been worried I would never be able to wear it again.
Have you ever been placed on bed rest before? Did you have a project you decided to sew while you were to pass the time? I would love to hear about your projects in the comments section.

These sleeves are made from thrift store fabric to mimic one possible way that "cut work sleeves" were made in the period. There are several theories, and my research has made me think that they all may have been in use at different points in time for different specific motifs. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">To make these sleeves I used a voided velvet scarf I found at my local thrift store and remnants of rayon velvet, silk shantung, and linen.
Techniques I cover in the video include basting, hemming stitches, and how to easily sew with velvet. I completed the project using a mix of hand sewing and a modern sewing machine.
I love wearing these Italian renaissance dresses at reenactment events or when I attend events for the Society of Creative Anachronism. Groups like this have helped me learn more about how period techniques and materials were used.
For More information on this and other renaissance inspired dresses please check out my 16th century sewing playlist:

Frequently this dress was prescribed based on social customs and laws in the different cities over time. My primary inspiration for this dress was focused on Roman women in the later 16th century. The history I found while making this dress deserves its own video, so today we are going to focus on how I made this 16th century little black dress called a sottona. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="366" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5IjlwxtmFPA" width="485" youtube-src-id="5IjlwxtmFPA"></iframe></div><br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div>

Upcycling give me so much joy when it comes to creating historical costuming. For me, one of the best parts of historical clothing is the small details, which includes jewelry. When I first saw this 1980s style gold necklace at my local thrift store I immediately started thinking of ways I could alter it for a 16th century choker necklace. The exact embellishment of these necklaces would change over the century so I had a lot of options to think over. Because I am a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, I thought it would be fun to include a peerage medallion in this process as well. While I do not officially speak for the Society for Creative Anachronism, I do love sharing projects I work on for this hobby. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
On this thrift store jewelry upcycle I used head pins, round jewelry pliers, a pendant, and freshwater pearls. Below are some links to similar items I was able to find on Amazon if you are curious. Links are affiliate links which support this channel.

A time where we should all be focusing on ways we can uplift the women in our lives a little more than usual. Since the demographics on this channel show that the majority of my viewers identify themselves as women, I want to share some information that might help you save funds our favorite hobby... sewing!
The basic idea of the pink tax is that there is an unnecessary additional mark up on items that are geared towards women. Frequently there is little or no distinction between items that are designated as "women's" and "men's" and the biggest difference is that the women's product is pink. For more information on the long term impacts of the pink tax on a women's earrings and career please check out these articles:

How does the pink tax effect sewing? As a community, we are mostly women and people who do market research know it. We love cute things and are frequently taken to the same hand full of craft stores like JoAnn Fabrics. It is hard to run a brick and mortar fabric store in the days of the internet, and I don't want to throw any shade at their fabric selection or their staff. Most craft stores are horribly understaffed to try and make up for other parts of their budget. My concern with this is coupon culture and marketing can mean that women are paying far more for some of these tools than is necessary. In this video I go to my local JoAnn Fabrics, Home Depot, and Harbor Freight Tools to comparison shop the cost of the same, or similar items across different retailers that are targeting women in their marketing vs. those who are not.
Some craft supplies I suggest comparing or picking up at the hardware store after this include:
Cotton Rope
Hammers and mallets
magnetics plates or magnets
Wood Stain
Upholstery tools
Knives and Razor Blades
Screwdrivers
Cleaning Supplies/ Tools
Lighting
Work or disposable Gloves
Where do you shop to save money on sewing tools? Let me know in the comments and thank you for watching.

My goal is to make sure everyone looking to buy the updated copy knows what they are and are not getting.
Please know the original edition is out of print, but may be available from used book sellers. Here is an Amazon affiliate link to the book we are discussing:

To my knowledge, the updated version is only available through the School of Historical Dress shop. The funds raised from book sales go to help fund the school and their research efforts. Non affiliate link below:

Those requests inspired my book review playlist. Lydia Edwards' book How to Read a Dress is a fantastic starting point for new historical costumers to start understanding changes in time of silhouette and fashions over time. The nature of the book will prevent it from being a deep dive into any particular era, but the book was designed as more of a survey course. You can also see updated commentary on Lydia's Instagram account linked below. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="367" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JBAFaR7jGVI" width="481" youtube-src-id="JBAFaR7jGVI"></iframe></div><br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span><p></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">

The extremes wear conditions that actresses have been facing in the film industry has been spoken to at length by other creators like Bernadette Banner and Abby Cox so I would direct you to their channels about corset myths. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">My focus for this vlog was to get out and take my pit bull on a hike for the first time since my injury, and why not break in my new corset at the same time? Through out the entire hike I had more difficulty with my ankle and navigating uneven ground than I had with the altitude or my corset. This corset was not custom made, but ready made. I worked with the seller to make sure I had one that was the correct size for my measurements and compression goals.
Do you wear corset on a regular basis? Tell me about your experiences below in the comments and thank you for watching

So why am I reviewing it? I d</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">on't really work in the same time period as Bernadette after all, and my audience prefers earlier periods I see. As an accomplished sewist in my own right, I spend quite a bit of time helping others learn how to sew. For years I've had new sewists work really well while we are together, but then when they go home to do finishing they get lost. This new resource helps to bring the historical hand sewing into a format which is more friendly for beginners learning how to sew. </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br />
As of the time of recording this book has reached #1 on Amazon for Sewing and Needlework (and is make in stock now!) Congratulations Bernadette for reaching #3 on the New York Times Best Seller List for How-To/Advice!
If you have not checked this book out, I would recommend reading it and applying the book to your own new sewing projects. There was lots of helpful advice for beginners learning to sew, and advanced sewers wanting to take some next steps. </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">

My earrings in particular were inspired by several pairs shows on the Fayum Mummies. The Fayum mummies are widely considered to date between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. After the death of Cleopatra VII, Egypt was controlled by the Roman Empire which lead to an interesting mix in places by Fayum which has Roman, Greek, and Egyptian influence.</span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
Depending on where I was living, costuming from ancient Rome became a mainstay of my summer costuming wardrobe. It lets air circulate, can accommodate a wide range of body shapes, and can be surprisingly elegant. I would highly recommend checking out ancient Roman clothing for your historical costuming summer wardrobe. Because the clothing is frequently simple with lovely details like the jewelry and hair, this is an ideal style for folks that love to make and add accessories to an outfit.
For more information on these mummies here is a decent article from Wikipedia. It also has the sourcing information for the mummy paintings I reference in this video.

Sometimes you don't want to put pins into fabric because it is too fine and the pins wont help, or it is really squishy. For those sewing projects try some pattern weights.
I saw some pins on how to make tile pattern weights from old backsplash tiles on Pinterest a few years ago and it resurfaced as a project I needed to try. For this project I used one sheet of backsplash tiles, goo gone, tacky glue, craft felt, and craft scissors. I wish I had used work gloves as part of this project to protect my hands.

It is a craft that is hard to document in the 16th century, where I do most of my work, but I love how quickly this technique works up into fairly strong cording.
This two tone technique is much stronger than a typical single strand lucet braid because of the extra cord running through the entire cord. I also love the possibilities for coordinating your laces to your outfits. My laces were made much longer than I needed them for this dress. Looking back I could have cut my lacing in half and been fine, but now I have all this extra if I should ever need it. Long laces also mean I can pre-lace myself into this dress with a spiral lace and then tighten it until I feel comfortable.
For this particular style of lucet I used a hardwood lucet fork I purchased from an 18th century reenactor, a skein of DMC 6-strand embroidery floss, and a ball of size 10 crochet cotton.
What do you use as lacing for your historical garments? Have you ever made your own lacing? Do you also have a strange sense of satisfaction when your laces coordinate with your outfit? Tell me about your lacing and cording adventures in the comments below!

Over the last year several of you have asked questions about historical hair care and bringing more of these practices into the 21st century for your own routines. In this video I go over some of the pros and cons for different hair care practices from the middle ages and today. Please do keep in mind that these observations are based on my personal experiences which might be different for other people with different hair types.
A few questions I go over include:
"What is the difference between medieval and modern hair care?"
"How do you prevent your hair from matting/ getting tangled?"
"Which products should I use for historical hairstyles?"
"What is your favorite historical hairstyle?"
I hope you enjoy this update on historical hair care that I was able to recover from the vault when my laptop data came back. Do you have a historical hair care question or tip? Please shar in the comments!

Today I am keeping up with the request you gave me to give you a tutorial on making renaissance turn shoes. At the time of upload, this was the most requested video in my recent community poll. I purchased this kit after my friend Amber </span><a class="mention-chip ytcp-mention-input" href="https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UCumY_AugOaPjn_TECUJMaXQ" spellcheck="false" style="border-radius: 3px; cursor: default; display: inline-block; max-width: 100%; overflow: hidden; pointer-events: none; text-decoration-line: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: top; white-space: nowrap;"> @DSA Threads Costuming </a><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; white-space: pre-wrap;"> make a pair for IRCC a few years ago. We chatted a bit while making them and she gave me some tips on how she decorated and sewed her shoes together. Check out the links below for her video on the shoes.
I originally was planning to make and wear these as a back up plan for my elevation to the order of the laurel in January, but it was a bit too wet and cold for me to really want to wear them outside. Instead I will have them for some of our warmer weather coming up this spring.
To make these shoes I used several of these items or similar tools. List does include Amazon affiliate links if you wish to purchase through them and continue to support this channel in a monetary way.

That's life living close to the mountains though. Inspired by today's snow I thought I would share my video tutorial on making 16th century muffs. Grab some tea because we are going to do a 1 day make project to start getting you ready for our cooler weather that will be starting next month. a few years ago I did a lot of research into how fur was used and worn in 16th century fashion, which lead me down the rabbit hole of researching methods of keeping your hands warm during the renaissance. I was shocked to learn people were using muffs as a dress accessory by the 2nd half of the 16th century to keep their hands warm. It is the earliest reference I have found to these tube shaped dress accessories being used, but if you know about earlier references please let me know in the comments. </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">For more details on muffs I've included a link back to my blog post I made about them, including historical references. <a href="http://tudorrevolution.blogspot.com/2014/05/perfectly-period-muff.html" target="_blank">Original Blog Post</a></span><div><br /></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
Woodcut included in video is from Cesare Vecellio's Habiti Antichi et Moderni: The Clothing of the Renaissance World. Translated by Margaret F. Rosenthal and Ann Rosalind Jones. You can also find copies of this woodcut online in the Museum of London's archives: <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/308496643230102386/" target="_blank">images</a></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
Items you will need for this project:
1/2 to 1/3 yd of fashion fabric such as velvet
1/2 to 1/3 yd of faux fur (choices discussed in video)
1 yd cotton batting
Trims, beads, and pearls to decorate your muff
Buttons and cording
Chalk, scissors, pins, needles, thread
I hope you enjoy this 1 day make to add more detail to your own renaissance wardrobe. If you make one of your won I would love to share it on Instagram stories! Tag me @maridith.smith

I talk a lot about 16th century haircare and hairdressing on this blog because I feel it completes the look of your historical outfits. Today we are going to work on a renaissance hair tutorial for long hair, but I will give you a few pointers on ways to adapt the style for shoulder length hair too. Make sure that your hair has been thoroughly combed out and separated with a center part while you are getting ready for this hairstyle. I would recommend having about 2.5-3 yards of silk ribbon on hand to complete the style for hair going to your waist. You may need less for shorter hair, or more to secure thicker hair. </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I have other blog posts where I go into history of hair dressing in the 16th century, and thought this video would be helpful for those out there trying to do a full circle or crown of braids instead of just a semi circle like I posted a few weeks ago. </span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="345" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GUY-thRRV_8" width="490" youtube-src-id="GUY-thRRV_8"></iframe></div><br />

When I teach sewing and historical tailoring classes in person I always seem to have people astonished by the amount of hand sewing it can take to complete one of my garments. I was that person too when I started. I remember swearing I would never put that much hand sewing into a garment, and then I slowly realized skipping these steps was not giving me the results I wanted.
This video is dedicated to me 7 years ago, and anyone else who is looking for the next step to improve their tailored garments. I hope this video is inspiring and helps to demystify some of the basic techniques I use in my videos and garments. If you have another technique you would like me to do a deep dive tutorial on please let me know in the comments.
In the modern day, professional tailors go through years of apprenticeship to learn their trade and I don't want anyone to be confused here. I am not a tailor. I have done alterations and working on military uniforms, but I was not trained as a professional tailor. If you would like more information on this and other tailoring techniques from the source I am going to recommend the resources linked below. Today's video is a project to bring a little fun and mischief to your lives as part of a collaboration with some other costubers to make our own Loki variants from different historical eras. While Daisy Victoria is doing a late 16th century interpretation, I am going to go with early 16th century Medici portraits for my inspirations. You can see a Pinterest board with some of m o inspiration images here:<a href="https://pin.it/2jb4B9P" target="_blank">pinterest board</a>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
There is a playlist of the other loki variant videos here: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlzCKYdIIKjAopweKuuSSEQmHovlE6tRT" target="_blank">Loki Variants Collab</a>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
The Balzo is a headgear style of the wealthy classes in early 16th century Italy. Contemporaries in the 16th century describe this style as taking up space. The goal for women wearing these dresses was to draw attention and physically claim their space in a room. I could not help but think of this hat for Loki who always wants to draw attention.
I used a grapevine wreath, medium weight linen scraps, silk noel, and a metallic silk sheer. I sincerely hope this tutorial on making a balzo is helpful to you. If you have any other tips for sewing metallic fabric, please share in the comments.

This renaissance hair tutorial is my go to style for those kinds of situations because it is quick, easy, and requires relatively few tools to dress your hair: ribbon of at least 2 yards, bodkins, mirror, 2 hair ties, and a comb. </span></p><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Roboto, Noto, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I wore this to a recent event with the Society for Creative Anachronism, but I've also worn it to work, the Ren Faire, and parties. In my experience, having the correct historical headgear or hairstyles can be the cherry on top of your new outfit. CoSy 2021 is finally here and I am so excited to get you started today with some renaissance costuming content. The earliest hairnets I have found reference to come to us from ancient Greece. The mesh work on these is much finer than the net I am going to show you to make today, as were many of the examples from the middle ages and renaissance. I am still in awe that we have surviving nets from these time periods for people to study! Some of my favorites are visible on the Museum of London's collections website.
in the 1540s and 1550s Eleonra di Toldedo, the duchess of Tuscany is often depicted in paintings, carvings, and other media with her hair parted down the middle and arranged into a gold scuffia, which we would today call a snood or hairnet. My goal today is to make a similar scuffia for my own dresses from this period. They are a very versatile accessory which allows the wearer to keep their hair contained, follow the letter of the laws about being modest and covering your hair, and subtlety display your wealth. While Elenora's scuffia were made of gold, the accessory was popular across several social classes. Working class women also wore these nets out of a more simple silk net.
The portrait of Elenora di Toledo is by Bronzino and currently is in the National Gallery in Prague. Portrait is in public domain.
To make this net you will need some supplies. Links below are affiliate links:
